SEPTUM DEVIATION

The septum is the structure that divides the right and left holes in the middle. The anterior part of this structure is cartilage, and the posterior part is bone. This structure should be straight to the midline and to provide equal ventilation to both air vents.

The curvatures of the structure that I describe as the septum in the midline of the nose are called septum deviation (deviation-curvature). Curvatures cause a number of problems. If the septum is curved to one side, it means that the air hole on that side will be less ventilated, or perhaps no air will pass.

WHY DOES SEPTUM DEVIATION OCCUR?

Septum deviation may develop due to traumas developed in infancy or childhood, nasal fractures. In some cases, cartilage development may be curved for no apparent reason.

Septum deviation can be corrected with surgical intervention. However, surgical intervention is not necessary for all curvatures of the cartilage. The important thing is that the curvature causes some problems in the patient.

SHOULD NOSE AESTHETICS SURGERY AND SEPTUM DEVIATION SURGERY BE DONE SEPARATELY?

The nose should be evaluated as a whole with its function and important place in facial appearance. Curvatures in the nasal cartilage often cause problems in the appearance of the nose. Septum deviation surgery has been described as a simple procedure by many physicians and has been performed very frequently in recent years.

If a patient who applied to me for rhinoplasty had a septoplasty operation before and was given a handful of cartilage after the operation, my job becomes very difficult.

In interventions performed outside the nose, cartilage is needed to raise the tip of the nose, shape it and support the nasal ridge. These cartilages are taken from the septum, that is, from the cartilage in the middle of the nose. The fact that these cartilages have been removed in another surgery may lead to additional interventions such as cartilage removal from the ear or rib.

As a surgeon who performs rhinoplasty, I have a higher chance of success in a nose that has not been operated before. Therefore, if you have a complaint about the shape of the nose or if you think that I want to change my nose shape in the future, it would be better to have both surgeries together.

WHAT DOES concha MEAN? WHAT DOES IT DO? CAN THESE STRUCTURES BE INTERVENED BY NOSE AESTHETIC SURGERY?

Concha are protrusions on the side wall of the nose resembling a radiator in the nasal cavity. These structures regulate and warm the air during the breathing process. In some cases, these structures may be larger than they should be. This makes breathing difficult.

If the large size of these structures creates a problem, these structures can also be reduced with rhinoplasty.
